When I noticed that my new laptop has a built-in webcam, I decided I no longer had a reason to put off doing a video post.
This is just a short video where I say a few words about video blogging. (The sound and lighting have some hiccups. I don’t know why.)
Mentioned in the video:
- Michael Martine at Remarkablogger, who mixes up his text posts with audio and video.
- Yaro Starak and Gideon Shalwick, whose Become a Blogger Roadmap defines the X-Factor as the intersection of multimedia and social media.
- Skellie, who says Video is Your Chance to be a Pioneer.
- Gary Vaynerchuk, a video blogger who became an internet celebrity when I wasn’t looking.

Great job, Hunter. You look really natural. That was the hard part for me. I feel so unnatural talking to the screen. If you’re not at ease, you’re doing a tremendous job of faking it. You’re right, it’s definitely a field that is still a frontier.
So when are you going to do the singing and dancing of your parodies?

@ Writer Dad, I should have mentioned that you and Eric have taken a major plunge into video at Blogopolis Blueprint. Yeah, it’s kinda weird talking to the screen, especially because I can see myself in the webcam software, so I’m inclined to look at myself instead of the camera. I guess it’s supposed to take some getting used to, or they wouldn’t call it a frontier!
@ Akemi, I need to find a girl who wants to play Michelle Pfeiffer’s part in that video!
I LOVED it! I agree with Sean – you look very much at ease. Looking forward to more video posts.
You sure look great!! You won’t have problems finding any girls for your videos!
Evelyn Lim´s last blog post..How To Get To Enlightenment
Hunter;
Here is my beef with video posts:
Although some people pull it off, the majority of those who do video updates and posts just come off sounding unprepared or boring. Broadcasters and TV personalities go to school and learn how to come off with ease on camera, just as writers learn to deliver the written word with some flair.
I know there are some naturals out there, just like writers. But the complaint about the poor quality of blog writing can also be transferred to video blogging.
I choose to basically ignore most video bloggers, unless they speak on a topic I truly have an interest in.
But, with all mediums, I think it will start to step up in quality. Instead of using a built in webcam, maybe add some production value. Solid editing, maybe even a nice DV camera for these kinds of posts.
Webcam video posts, while some are good, remind me of a low-fi Blogspot blog, where if people can add some production value to them, they will be like having your own domain/wordpress blog.

Looks fine here Hunter, I agree with the others in that you should do some more videos!
Maybe turn one of your most popular posts into a video so you can give it more emphasis?
Cheers,

Liked the video post and enjoyed the humor. I have created one video post so far. It was meant to be a series…but I never created a second video. It think it’s time to jump in again and be one of those pioneers.

@ Vered, thanks, more will be forthcoming.
@ Evelyn, ha ha, let me know if you’ll be in town to do a music video!
@ Scott, good points. I think I’ll reply in a separate post.
@ Glen, on occasion I’ve redone a post when I thought I could do it better, so using video to spruce up an old post is definitely an option.
@ Stacey, your first video post was really funny with the subtitles you added. I hope you do some more.
Sorry to be so late to this party, but I thought it went well. Production values don’t matter even half as much as personality. I’d say the reactions here are proof of concept for you. I enjoyed your sense of humor as well.
If you’re really sure of what you want to say, a quick video is often much faster than writing out a post. People connect more strongly with you when they see your face and hear your voice, and I think that’s important in the long run for internet business.
Looking forward to more.
Michael Martine´s last blog post..How To Profit Through Selective Listening
@ Michael, we’re still open, and we even have another bottle of champagne left. I’m very slow at writing posts, and I guess video could possibly be faster in some cases. That’s assuming you don’t do 100 takes though! But I did my second video in just one take, so maybe it gets easier once you get your feet wet.
