@ View, once you buy the books, they're associated with your Amazon account. You can always download them again for free, even if you buy a new Kindle. There's always the risk of theft or damage, but that's no different from any other portable electronic device. I don't think the price is too bad, when you consider what some people spend on coffee.

So now you have a Kindle and the screen go out or the battery goes bad or god forbids someone steals it or you drop it and break it. What then? What about all the money that you also spent for the books? Yes books are cumbersome and traveling with them is a drag sometimes but there is a whole business out there selling used books and how about the new books. While the Kindle does have its place in the system I think that people will find that until the price of the kindle gets better and there is some way to get the books you bought back, and maybe there is, I think that it’s out of the reach for most people except for those who have to have the newest and best toys.

@ Barbara, unfortunately, "more time for reading" is something that technology can't give us! Good luck though.

Hi Hunter - Thank you for Tweeting me this link. I've heard about the Kindle, didn't know too much about it, but after reading your review, I can see how it would be convenient. The price does seem high, but like you said, if a person buys a lot of books at full price, it wouldn't take too many real book purchases to have the Kindle pay for itself.

I'll have to put it on my wish list, right after "more time for reading" (books, that is).

@ Scott, thanks for the support. :)

@ Bamboo Forest, what's a "book store?" Oh, one of those coffee shops that happens to have a few books? :) I expect they'll be around for a while, but they're definitely on their way out. Sad? A little. But if they want to stick around, they'll have to find something they can do better than the Kindle.

I think the kindle is a marvelous invention. But it will be kinda sad if eventually book stores go out of business.

@Glen. I find the pop up quite annoying too; but that is part of the deal with the web. If you appreciate the information on a website, you have to be willing to deal with an occasional ad, pop up for newletter, ect ect - It's not as if Hunter is requiring you to pay 10 cents for each view. Writers need to be compensated, and if that means a pop ad, a newsletter subscription, well, that's what it takes to keep this site running in his eyes. And for me, the pop up only comes once a visit. No biggie.

@Hunter. I love my kindle. I agree with you, it is an important innovation. For that person who was talking about becoming an iphoner, forget the iphone. A cell phone should be a phone. And the kindle is a great information resource.

@ Carla, I don't know what plans they have for the price. The Kindle 2 costs as much as the Kindle 1 did new, but the Kindle 1 price must have come down by now (if it's even available anymore). Also, there must be lots of used Kindle 1s on the market. If you want a Kindle 2, keep an eye on it and see if the price drops. Hope to see you become a Kindler!

I am hoping to see a lower price in the next few months, but that will be my next electronic gadget purchase. Thank you for this detailed review!

@ Glen, growing my list of newsletter subscribers is vital to my online success, and therefore the pop-up is too. However, it’s set to only appear once for each visitor. Not once a day or once a month, but just once period. If you’ve seen it a million times, then there’s a problem with your browser settings.

In response to this issue, I got a comment from AWeber’s CEO, Tom Kulzer. He said,

“The popover web form you are using will only be displayed once per visitor assuming the visitor has cookies enabled on their web browser. If someone has their cookies turned off (which would break many websites from functioning properly) the form will be displayed every time. That’s a limitation of web browser technology and not something that’s broken or fixable on our end.”

I think with a Kindle, anyone is likely to buy far more books than before. But some of that will offset money that would have been spent on other things. Like maybe you’ll read a book instead of going to a movie. I guess book addiction is something to watch out for, but a lot of people (myself included) would benefit from becoming mildly addicted to books.
