@ Alex, that sounds like a great way to handle it. Even if they have poor customer service, at least they give you the option of being left alone!

@ Barbara, I asked if the recession was the reason for the huge discounts, and they said yes, they were just doing anything they could to get people in the store. But they don't need to just get people in, they want them to come back!

Oh Hunter, I just love your stories. With the recession I'm guessing the sales staff are put on high alert to make whatever sales they can. However, asking a customer to the point of annoyance isn't going to do it. In fact, that will only drive customers away.

In Spain they leave you alone unless you ask for something. Some of the chain clothing stores are beginning to have their staff ask if you need help but a quick "not at the moment" sends them away until you ask.

Spain has a reputation for poor customer service, but I actually really like this model. You know that staff is there to help you if you need it but they don't push.

@ Ari, you know, I didn't think to check for a wedding ring! :)

@ Hayden, that's surprising. I wonder how big a commission someone would get for signing someone up. I wouldn't think it would be that much, and certainly not enough to be worth making customers not like them.

@ Kathy, 40% is really good, but then you pay for it when dealing with the salespeople. Maybe I'll need 50% next time. Or they could just be less obnoxious and then I'd be OK with 30%!

Oh Hunter- I almost peed myself when I read, "Oh good, because my goal was to impress this annoying person I’d never see again."

Now you know WHY they have to lure you in with 40% off coupons!!! The question is, how high will they have to go to lure you back another time?

You are a much more patient and tolerant customer than I will ever be -especially while at Best Buy!

By the way, the Google gods must approve of your stories. As I write this comment, my eye is caught by your Adsense ad - it's for corporate sales training.

For some strange reason, I HOPE that Banana Republic and Best Buy see that ad and click IMMEDIATELY! We just lost Circuit City in our area - if Best Buy falls, I'll have to purchase computer supplies at Staples!

What you described for Banana Republic is also the same nonsense that happens at a Verizon store...except those people get paid on commission and they don't leave you if they can possibly help it. This is actually one of the reasons we quit using Verizon as our cell phone carrier.

Your Banana Republic story is HILARIOUS! You must be a cute guy and maybe she liked you. I've never encountered sales women asking if I'd like to model new jeans for them!
