@ Marelisa, oops, I thought you said meditation, not mediation! Mediation makes a little more sense. :)

Here in Panama. At the Panama Canal workers don't have the right to strike, so the emphasis was placed on alternative methods of resolving disputes. In addition, the court system leaves a lot to be desired, so a lot of business people look to arbitration and mediation to resolve their conflicts.

@ Akemi, you're rare and special anyway, no matter your type!

@ Bill, that's great that you've put Esperanto to use in real life. I don't remember any of it, but I guess what you said at the end is Happy New Year?

@ Amanda, we're all trying to do different things, and do them in our own way. Sometimes we wish other people could be more like us, but it would be terrible if we were all clones!

@ Brian, that's an interesting point of view. I find it disappointing that it has seen much less growth than it deserves. Wouldn't it be cool if schools just started teaching it today?

@ Marelisa, that's very interesting that you took a graduate course in meditation. Where was that?

@ Patricia, some people have said that the fastest way to learn French is to learn Esperanto first and then French - it's faster than just learning French directly! One thing that's great right off the bat is no irregular verbs.

Hunter,
This is a great article and I have wondered since I can't with ease learn languages if I could in fact learn Esperanto? Haven't investigated this further

I am enjoying being on Twitter and am going to follow Marelisa's list this new year to see if I can also make it productive.

I used to be able to rattle off the Meyers Briggs letters, but don't even remember the stuff now. I have been working with Marshall Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communications book and workshops. An amazing man and mediator...who can get two tribal leaders to sit down with each other knowing that the other killed their child...they can resolve their conflict or lack of communication and be peaceful with each other...awesome stuff.

It is such a respectful way to communicate or conflict without damaging another person but by holding them up and with full respect and dignity for all involved.
I do think knowing oneself is extremely valuable

Hi Hunter: I hadn't heard of Esperanto, but it's a very noble idea. You're absolutely right that a lot of unnecessary conflict is caused because we fail to put ourselves in the shoes of the other before reacting. Maybe it's because I took a graduate course in mediation, but I've gotten a lot better at trying to understand where another person is coming from instead of trying to impose my worldview on them and insisting that everything be done according to my set of rules. I really liked how you tied the Myers-Briggs personalities into this.

I'm amazed at how Esperanto has made so much progress, in a short period of time!

During a short period of 121 years, Esperanto is now within the top 100 languages, out of 6,800 worldwide, according to the CIA factbook. It is the 17th most used language in Wikipedia, and in use by Skype, Firefox and Facebook.

Native Esperanto speakers,(those who have spoken the language since birth) include George Soros, Nobel Laureate Daniel Bovet, and World Champion Chess Player, Susan Polger. Yet many people still suggest that Esperanto is not a "living language"

Further arguments can be seen at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8837438938991452670 and a glimpse of the language at http://www.lernu.net

I like what you said about all of us having a role to fulfill. Certainly, we are not all here to try to do the exact same thing. That would be boring and really unproductive!

It was good to see the positive reference to Esperanto here. Esperanto works! I learned it in my late teens, and I've used it in speech and writing in a dozen countries over recent years. As a planned auxiliary language, it is easier to learn and use than national tongues.
