I have worked in both the traditional business world and network marketing. When people use the term ”pyramid scheme” I often wonder if they even know what that means. If it means a company where people at the top make all the money, you have to look no further than any “traditional Company” (CitiGroup, GE, IBM, GM, Microsoft, ExxonMobil, Boeing, Wal-Mart, Pfizer, American Int’l Group, etc…) where the Chairman, CEO, VPs and Board of Directors sequentially squander the bulk of profits while salaried employees work hard, get taxed to death, and make the select few at the top rich while struggling to stay afloat.

In extreme cases like EnRon and more recently Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae and a host of others on Wall Street, many hard-working people lost their entire savings while top executives continued to collect their multi-million dollar salaries and bonuses after the companies claimed Bankruptcy. Painful examples of “the house always wins”, and the house is indeed a “pyramid”.

In any licensed Network Marketing company people start out at the same level and have an equal opportunity at success so long as they do 2 simple things. 1) acquire customers to share the products/services the company offers and 2) grow a team of representatives to duplicate your success. You work for yourself by building your own business within a business and have a solid support system from other independent reps whose long-term success is totally dependent on yours.

So, people actually help one another, unlike the corporate establishment where people will do anything to step on you if it will benefit them, even in the short-term. Commissions are paid by the Network marketing company and NOT directly by reps in your team or clients you have acquired.

This is by no means a “get rich quick” scheme but an endeavour that will require anywhere from 3-10 years of hard work and sacrifice, 5-20 hours per week, so don’t be in any rush to quit your day job unless the residual income from your business is firmly in place. Success awaits those who work very hard and consistently but just as much chance of failure for those who do nothing. Yes, there have been horror stories in this industry but no more than any other. MLM is, admittedly, an unorthodox Business Model and throughout history people have been afraid of what they do not understand, leading to uninformed stereotypes. I’m just seeing it from both sides, which is what anyone seeking the truth should.

Either way using Internet Marketing is necessary to stay relevant in the 21st century. Blogging has become so popular everyone who is serious about promoting a product, service, business opportunity etc…has to have one setup. Merging old school MLM with cutting edge Web 2.0 (and soon 3.0) marketing will optimize your chances of success. Cheers!

@ Evelyn, I didn't know you did that before. Yes, the rah-rahs are a struggle, aren't they? I can see that blogging is a great fit for you, so I'm glad you left network marketing in order to blog!

I tried network marketing at one stage. It didn't quite work out with me. I found it a struggle to keep up with the Ra-Rahs. However, I noted that my friend who started off at about the same time, has done very well and making a ton of money. The network marketing model allows him to leverage the effort put in by his team members. Not that he does not work hard, he does!!

Do I wish that I have continued and stayed on, due to the attractive remuneration and the fact that blogging is a lot harder in terms of generating a decent income? No way!! I'm much happier with what I'm doing now. Network marketing is not for everyone. The failure rate can also be high. What is most important is to do what resonates well with ourselves, core values and passion.

@ Davina, 2 AM? Go back to sleep! Read blogs later!

@ Vincent, yes, we pick whatever we want to write about. Very different from a job, where they say, "here, write this."

@ Kathy, you could also put a Taco Bell in the middle of the woods and no one would find it, but hopefully they'd stop you from doing that! And yes, so much comes down to selling in some form.

@ Conrad, that's a good idea. Find your prospects where they live and you're like a problem-solving angel to them! Oh, and I got your Digg right here!

Hey Hunter, thanks for the reply.

I liked what you said about trust and interest, very good way of putting it.

You use PPC? Thats great, I have been using PPC for years for my family business, it works wonderfully for us.

With the affiliate sales, I go to forums and social networks and pursue people who might need hosting. It can be annoying because often it takes a few hours of your time per sale, but you make a really good commission, which is worth it to me. The per-hour rate works out.

Can I get a Digg? ;)

"Nothing happens in business until something gets sold."

Taco Bell is selling a slam dunk, guaranteed money making opportunity. MLM - not so much, but still the possibility is there - if you can sell.

Ah, "If you can sell" - the thing is, a successful blog is really just that - a blog that sells. Most of us are "selling" ideas via our blogs. Those who sell well and "sell" ideas of "value" succeed. (Like you have) Others - not so much.

I agree with you Hunter. We can choose our own topic of interest to blog and blogging of our own interest is definitely interesting. Thanks for sharing.

@ Conrad, as for approaching friends for network marketing, I'd say don't do it unless they beg you. I'd much rather talk to someone who's interested and try to get them to trust me, than talk to someone who trusts me and try to get them interested. I use pay-per-click marketing to drive traffic to a lead generation page.

But I think blogging can make your friends hate you, if you pester them for Diggs!

That's interesting about actively pursuing leads and using your blog as a sales tool. So how did you go about finding those leads?
