“What are your top 1,000 ways to be happy? Share them in the comments.”
Ha.
If people take you seriously, this is going to be a LONG comment thread.

Hi Hunter,
I saw the title of this post in my reader and said “What’s Hunter up to now, certainly he didn’t post 1000 ways” (to be happy). But you did. I can’t believe it.
I’ll have to work on my list. I’ll be back in a year or two to share it.

#446. Upgrade Wordpress - this isn’t guaranteed happiness, so maybe the title should be “999 ways to be happy and 1 way to feel nervous?”

Hunter,
I knew you’d be in trouble and some people would take this seriously. Oh well… what can you do?

Dear God, my browser exploded loading this list

@ Vered, lowering expectations is great because it’s entirely up to us. A lot of the time, people insist that the world change, and forget that they have the option of changing too. Not to say that you have to put your expectations down in the gutter, but you can be happy with less than perfection.
@ Barbara, I see that list posts tend to be popular, and usually bigger numbers seem to do better, so I thought “why not?” But it turned out to be a lot harder than I thought!
@ Al, I had trouble on my last upgrade, so I definitely know what you mean. I guess all of these things have the potential to backfire. Like #1 - you could take a walk and die. Some of these ways are more likely than others to work out, but ultimately, happiness is up to us rather than the method we use to reach it.
@ Jonathan, of course this was a bit tongue-in-cheek, but still, any one of these could be just what someone needs to happy. I’m actually going to use this post to support a more serious post on happiness.
@ Dave, uh-oh, are you using IE?

You put # 72 in there just so I couldn’t finish the list, didn’t you.
This was a riot! I really couldn’t believe you were going to have 1000 things. Love how you tossed in your links. My favorites are #96 and #125. Great job!!!

Ha ha! Wonder where you got this idea from eh? I smiling big. Thanks for popping by Rebel Zen today dude!

Woah thats a huge list there Hunter! Haha. #345 is awesome (cos I’m here!)

This is hilarious. I like this one, “Talk to someone about your problems and realize how stupid they sound.” LOL!

LMAO - That is amazing, how long did it take you to do that???
Excellent tongue in cheek stuff.

“you can be happy with less than perfection.” Amen to that.
August 22nd, 2008 at 5:21 pm
This is great Hunter! I guess it goes to show that being happy is a choice: just choose to do any of 1000 things. I think I’m going to go look for tadpoles now

“find a feather’? I am still laughing….actually I used to turn those into ink quill pens at my Grammy’s. Made me happy for hours.
This is like some bizarre game of blog Twister isn’t it….

Holy crap Batman! This must be the longest list ever posted. I’m kind of fond of #862. I look for pigs all the time for happiness.

Following you on Twitter. There. I’m happy now.
I’m sorry, but I couldn’t make it through the list. I stopped at Twitter. How conditioned is that?! E

The day will come when I’ve collected 10,000 and publish a post on it!! Hahaha…
Still, it’s quite a feat to have a 1,000-list. Hope you do well on SU!!

@ Annie, I guess substitutions are allowed for the ones that don’t apply to you. If you can complete all of them except #72, that’s pretty good!
@ Seamus, that post you’re referring to was just good timing–my list already had 800 ways when I read it!
@ Daniel, but that doesn’t mean you’re perpetually happy if you live there. You’ll need to add another item to the list since #345 is too easy for you!
@ Shilpan, sometimes we think our problems are so big, but when we try to explain them to another person, they don’t seem so big anymore, right?
@ Tim, WAY too long! But it was worth it–they say you need big numbers in the title to do well on social media.
@ Marelisa, yes, it’s a choice. And no one’s limited to these 1,000 ways. There are many more, for anyone who feels too constrained!
@ Janice, I didn’t realize feathers were that effective. It just goes to show that the simple things work. Twister? More like a scavenger hunt, I think.
@ Jeff, I’m not sure, but it’s the longest list I’ve seen. And if pigs work for you, I’d stick with your specialty.
@ Ellen, wow, you did one already. Why can’t the rest of you people be more like Ellen?
You got 2/3 of the way through, so I’d say that’s a way above average attention span.
@ Evelyn, if you do that, then I guess I’ll have to do 100,000! Oh my, that would take the rest of my life, so I hope we don’t get stuck in competition. Let’s try to complete all 1,000 of these before we expand the list!

This post could also be phrased as ‘1000 ways to be sad or happy’.
Each of them can go either way depending on the internals of a person.

@ Harmony, whistle while you work - how did I miss that one? Great addition to the list.
@ Jarrod, true. In fact, you’ll notice that some of them are contradictory, like #139 (get married) and #140 (get divorced). It will always depend on the person.

Wow Hunter - I can’t believe it. I didn’t seriously expect you to come up with 1000 things. How long did this take you?
Seriously though - you made one huge screw up. Don’t try to tell me eating less chocolate will make me happy because I don’t believe you. It’s nearly as bad as telling me I should eat less biscuits.
I think you’re involved in a secret ploy to hide the chocolates and biscuits from me.

1. Visit Guam
2. Look for Geckos
I’ve been meaning to subscribe to you since I see you at BWOAB all the time but keep forgetting so guess what happened?
I clicked the little button on my Google reader that said DISCOVER and YOU came up!! How cool is that. Kismet my friend.Kismet.

Hunter-
No, Twister. I scrolled down fast and scanned the list of a 1,000. The list is a briliiant idea and is a scavenger hunt of sorts. But, scroll it down quickly, and it reminds me of a cosmic game of Twister. Turning ourselves this way and that in search of something that is within all the time. Maybe a little bit of zen creeping in there in my response.
I love the list. And actually think I ‘ll swipe some of your ideas.
But maybe…maybe, what we might do is this: don’t just do something, stand there…and decide to BE happy…for a start.
I hope that makes some kind of sense. Every since I saw that Chinese gymnast run through the air to light the torch, perspective shifted just a bit.
I love your creative nature. Wonderful posts lately.
August 24th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
@ Cath, it’s OK, I said “eat chocolate,” not “don’t eat chocolate.” I would never try to rid the world of chocolate!
@ Dr. Cason, nice to see you here. I left out Guam because it’s a U.S. territory, not an independent country. As for geckos, they just seem to have been left off Wikipedia’s list of animals. I wonder why? Surely this travesty must be corrected!
Thanks for “discovering” me–I don’t know if that’s happened before, and it’s very cool!
@ Janice, wow, that’s very zen-like. I’ll have to give it some thought. Great point there about BEing happy instead of DOing happy things, and you’re reading my mind a little. More on that later.

I’ll look forward to it.

@ Steve, maybe you were close, but you just need more practice.
@ Robert, I haven’t done all of these things yet, so I’ll have more fun to come!
@ Keith, I can understand not agreeing with them all, but hopefully you’ll find a few hundred you like to keep you busy!
