@ Terrence, I guess you're using StumbleUpon the way it was meant to be used - as a discovery tool. That's good because some people get in trouble by doing the opposite - using it purely for promotion. I'll let you know if I hear about a Digg course!

Hey Hunter
Thanks for this. I've been Stumbling for awhile now and it never occurred to me that my new blog could benefit from it. I signed up for the (free) Stumble Courses. I 3rd the motion for the Digg course.

@ Cath, yeah, I think I remember you commenting on Caroline's blog that you were looking forward to it. It's a shame they banned you for no reason. Caroline said that at least the Africanized bees comment made her laugh. And a Digg course? I'd be interested in that!

Hi Hunter - I was really looking forward to this course - then I got unfairly banned from StumbleUpon. Africanized bees - I've had some mean comments written on my posts but that is really cruel.

Someone please write a Digg course, as I'd love to learn more about it.

@ Barbara, that's sort of like me. Back when I didn't get many requests it was no problem, but in time it became a bit too much. I respond better when the request is more personalized and says why the post is special, instead of just another post. Surprise stumbles are great, aren't they?

@ Shamelle, I don't know what kind of subscription rate I get from StumbleUpon, but it's probably pretty low. Still, it doesn't have to be very high for it to be worthwhile. I think StumbleUpon is really good too!

@ Vered, I have seen posts do well in SU, then cool off, and then get a second wind, so yeah, it does happen. I'm not sure what their algorithm is (and I guess no one else is either). I agree that writing good content and being a good stumbler pays off.

@ Ari, aha - another example of the flare up! I've found that SU traffic to a particular post usually dries up pretty quickly, but sometimes flare ups happen, and that's always nice.

@ Austin Hike and Bike, I do see people putting a StumbleUpon message at the end of their posts. Sometimes it's a generic message that appears on every post saying "if you liked this post, please stumble it" and sometimes it's a message they wrote specifically for that post. I don't think anyone would have a problem with asking for stumbles in that way.

@ Marelisa, now that's interesting - to write a post a month ago and get a ton of traffic now. Seeing as how StumbleUpon is our biggest traffic source, it only makes sense to learn more about it.

@ Shilpan, wow, 22K visits in one day is amazing! I think if your post gets discovered by a power user, it can help a lot more than being stumbled by someone who hasn't built up their profile yet. I was wondering if someone was going to stumble this, as it seemed a bit ironic. Then again, the StumbleUpon home page has received tons of stumbles!

@ Evelyn, I know...you're a great stumbler! I don't know if reviews actually count for anything, other than getting people to notice you. But I don't know, and I haven't gotten to that part in Caroline's course yet! You're right about the conversion rate being very low, though I haven't actually tried to work out any statistics. Still, even a small rate * many visitors can add up.

I must admit that I love stumbling. I stumble everyday I'm on the PC! Friends don't actually have to ask me for a request before I stumble. But of course, an email tinker from any of them, helps to remind me that it is a post that they wish to promote.

As far as I can, I also try to write in a review on SU. However, I must admit that time no longer permits me to do this that often anymore. I've also noticed that not many folks take the time to write a review. So do reviews on SU blog count? If they do, then I'd wish for more on mine.

I also wonder about the conversion rate from SU traffic. Do they convert well? Yes...you may claim to be having 20,000 unique visitors but did anyone bother to subscribe?

Maybe Caroline has all the answers to my questions. Thanks for pointing out her course to me!

Stumbled as always!

Hunter -

I agree with Vered that sometimes even old posts get hits from SU just because someone found them. Last week, someone found the Bruce Lee post and I received over 22K visits in a day for the post that was few weeks older at the time.

You have written a good intro to SU. I can't help but stumble this. :)

I'm going to check out that free course you mention here. Yesterday I was getting tons of traffic and when I checked what was happening it was because a post I wrote about a month ago had gotten stumbled, and the two more people added reviews. Most of my traffic comes from stumble as well. It's definitely something I want to know more about, thank you for this information.

Very helpful info. I think it is not a problem to ask for "stumbles", but I do think you need to do it the right way. Obviously not by harassing people. I do think a it is okay to ask at the end of blog posts.
