Barbara, my understanding of jobs in the earlier days is that people really didn't want to switch employers. For one thing, pensions were a big deal, and you didn't want anything to mess up your years of service. But I'd guess that people also felt loyal to their employers.

When I had been at my first job for a few months, I didn't think I'd ever leave, and I didn't understand why people job hopped. But then after a year, the bubble burst. I managed to hang on for another three years before being laid off, but since then I've never trusted anything to be permanent.

Hi Hunter,

This is a great story. I never realized that Edison had failed that many times. But that does show that persistence pays off, doesn’t it?

It is amazing how our job history is so different than before. We rarely see those “lifers”. Maybe in the earlier days, people didn’t realize they had a choice (or maybe they didn’t), but now young people can explore so many possibilities.

As an employer, we do not expect our employees to remain with us forever. Although we do spend a considerable amount of time and money in training them, we realize they are going to want to move on, sooner or later. We try to put ourselves in their shoes, and realize we would do the same.

I like how you remind your readers to focus on where they want to go. I know it helped me….I don’t want to end up “somewhere else”.
